Why Change to Natural Soap?

January 16, 2020

What is natural soap?

Natural soaps are unique because they are made from plant based products and essential oil blends which puts them in the classification of mild soap. There should be no artificial ingredients added to any soap that claims to be natural and their ingredients should be sustainably sourced.

Why should we use natural soap?

Correctly manufactured natural soap should only contain plants products and essential oils. These could include olive oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, mango oil, rosehip oil, manuka honey, aloe vera, lavender oil, coconut oil, lemongrass, lemon myrtle, charcoal, evening primrose oil, the list is endless. These are just some examples of sweet smelling compounds ethical soap manufacturers include in their bars of soap.

The people who list the ingredients in soap have got really tricky. They manufacture words and add disclaimers to keep us all confused about what we are buying. The artificial chemicals added to some soaps can be bad for our bodies, bad for the environment and dangerous when it comes to our wellbeing.

How can your skin benefit from natural soap?

We need to concentrate on the outside of our body just as much as the inside. Our skin is our biggest organ. Everything we put on it is absorbed into the body and then the bloodstream. The type of soap and skin care products we use are really important to our body care and overall health.

Natural ingredients from our soaps which help promote good skin include:

What is contained in soap NOT made from natural ingredients?

Your skin is your largest organ and 60% of whatever you put on it will make its way into your bloodstream. This is why you should seriously consider what you put on your skin.  Many commercial soaps contain ingredients that are actually harmful to human skin.

Detergents

Let’s be clear, soaps and detergents are not the same thing, so we should not simply accept there will be detergent agents in soap. Detergents are made from petrochemicals. Their primary compounds are foaming agents and alcohol. Any products that contain detergents are classified as a cosmetic, not a soap.

To  remove the unpleasant petrochemical smell they are loaded with artificial fragrances. To increase their longevity preservatives and antibacterial agents are added which often cause allergies and skin irritations.

Parabens

Used as a preservative in soap but has been linked to a wide range of health risks including the disruption of hormone production.

Artificial colours

The most common artificial colouring in soap is titanium dioxide which gives soap its white appearance but others include Blue 1, Red 33, Yellow 5. These are simply unnecessary artificial chemicals that should be avoided.

Artificificial fragrances

This could mean one chemical or one hundred. Either way, the synthetic fragrance will be absorbed into the skin and you won’t know what ingredient/s it is. It will only be listed on the packaging as “fragrance”.

Sulphate

Used to create more bubbles and a quick lather effect which doesn’t last, however this chemical is known to irritate the eyes, skin and lungs.

10 reasons to change to natural soap is just the tip of the iceberg. Next time you pick up your regular soap take a moment to actually check the ingredients listed.

If they are not all natural there will be another soap not far away that will contain plant based products and that will definitely be a better choice.
